The upcoming production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ will run from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3
Cynthia Ẻivo will be performing in Jesus Christ Superstar.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, it was announced that the Wicked star, 38, will be leading the lineup for the Hollywood Bowl’s 2025 production, playing the role of Jesus.
According to the Hollywood Bowl website, Jesus Christ Superstar will play from Aug. 1 to Aug. 3. While other cast members will be announced at a later date, the production will be directed and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. Stephen Oremus will also conduct and direct the music.
Sharing the news on her Instagram Stories, Erivo expressed her excitement for her new role. “Just a little busy this summer,” she wrote alongside a wink face emoji. “Can’t wait!!”
Per Deadline, Erivo also played Mary Magdalene in the all-female concept album Jesus Christ Superstar: She Is Risen in 2020.
According to Variety, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of the final week of the life of Jesus. It was originally released as a concept album, before making its way to Broadway in 1971.
A movie adaptation directed by Norman Jewison was then released in 1973. In 2018, John Legend played Jesus Christ in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert on Easter Sunday of that year.
According to the Los Angeles Times, this year’s production is set to be the Bowl’s first summer musical since taking a hiatus following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We missed the musicals for a few years, and I think that one is a good one to return with,” L.A. Phil President and Chief Executive Kim Noltemy told the outlet. “Whether it be staffing or psychological transition, we needed time to get back up to running like the machine we can be when everything’s going well.”
The Hollywood Bowl’s summer season is also set to see Hugh Jackman performing songs from The Greatest Showman, The Music Man and others during the opening night. Per Deadline, summer will also see concerts by Diana Ross, Legend, 46, Cyndi Lauper, Charlie Wilson and more.
