An American basketball player was arrested last week after police in Indonesia raided his apartment and found 132 pieces of THC candies, according to several reports.
Dallas native Jarred Dwayne Shaw, 34, has been banned for life from the Indonesian Basketball League and now faces a possible life sentence or even the death penalty if found guilty, according to the Associated Press, USA Today and local Fox 4 Dallas.
Shaw was officially charged with drug smuggling, according to the AP. Authorities presented him at a news conference on Wednesday, May 14 where he appeared with his hands tied, wearing an orange detainee t-shirt. He did not speak during the appearance, the outlet reported.
The AP reports that about 530 people are currently on death row in Indonesia, and most of them are facing drug charges. The country last carried out executions in July 2016, including executing three foreign citizens, according to the outlet.
Shaw was arrested at his apartment in Cisauk, Tangerang Regency on May 7 after Soekarno-Hatta Airport Police raided his apartment on suspicion of drug smuggling, according to USA Today. A spokesperson for the airport police told the outlet that it had received a package sent from Thailand to Shaw’s address, where they found 132 pieces of Delta 9 THC cannabis candies.
Shaw reportedly told police he ordered the THC candies for his teammates, according to Fox 4.
The former Utah State and Oklahoma State basketball player has played in the Indonesian Basketball League since 2022, following several years in the NBA’s developmental G-league.
Tangerang Hawks’ manager, Tikky Suwantikno, told the AP that Shaw’s team immediately fired him for a breach of contract following his arrest earlier this month. The league’s chairman, Budisatrio Djiwandono, told the AP that Shaw was banned for life over the charge.
“We don’t tolerate players, administrators or anyone in the field involved in drugs,” the Indonesian Basketball League chairman told the outlet. “There is no room for drug users in the basketball world.”
Although cannabis has been decriminalized in Thailand, where Shaw allegedly ordered the candies from, since 2024, Indonesia has some of the world’s strictest drug laws, according to the AP. In the past, the country has carried out executions over drug charges via firing squad, the AP reported.
