As pedestrians passed by a forlorn, wounded, and defeated dog, slumped on the sidewalk, their hearts were touched. However, even her suffering couldn’t compel them to extend a helping hand. Fear gripped them because of her large size, causing them to step away.

Who could have imagined that such a frail and anguished furry creature could pose any threat?

This unfortunate incident unfolded in the town of Karditsa, Greece. It was only after a concerned neighbor alerted volunteers from Diasozo Animal Rescue that the dog, known as Markella, found a glimmer of hope.

Ermioni Giannakou, the shelter’s founder, along with fellow rescuers Katerina and Fotini, rushed to assess the situation. Little did they know what they were about to witness and discover.

In agony, Markella had waited for over 12 hours for help, eventually succumbing to her injuries. She simply collapsed in pain on the pavement, her eyes shutting. It became evident that her suffering stemmed not only from her physical wounds but also from the heartbreak inflicted upon her.

Locals recounted that Markella once had a loving family who tossed her onto the streets from a moving car. They witnessed her roaming, approaching every vehicle as if desperately searching for her owner.

Her family had discarded her like trash, leaving her utterly devastated. To make matters worse, she was struck by another vehicle on the roadside, sustaining a painful fracture that left her unable to walk.

When Ermioni gently stroked her, the dog was so weak that she appeared lifeless.

Without hesitation, Ermioni cradled Markella in her arms, despite her considerable size, and rushed her to an emergency veterinarian. Markella had endured several excruciating injuries, including a severe fracture in her little paw. Ermioni feared that, despite their best efforts to save her and her subsequent recovery, finding her a new home would prove to be an arduous task. Large, elderly dogs are often overlooked for adoption.

“We could see the profound sadness in her eyes. It was heart-wrenching for both of us,” Ermioni lamented.

Markella’s fracture eventually healed, and she embarked on her first journey after recovery. However, something remarkable unfolded.

She displayed a longing, as if still harboring hope of reuniting with the family who had discarded her. It was astounding to witness the resilience of a dog’s heart—capable of love, forgiveness, and letting go of the past.

Their worst fears materialized as days turned into weeks and months passed without finding a suitable adopter. Nevertheless, they refused to give up.

Their unwavering efforts bore fruit when a guardian angel from the UK appeared, ready to provide Markella with a forever home.
