Meagan Wight, a 32-year-old mother, is sharing the remarkable story of her baby boy, Dominic, who suffered a stroke while in the hospital, defying the cardiologist’s predictions that he may never wake up and leaving him with distinctive red marks on his body.
Meagan was 32 weeks pregnant when an ultrasound revealed that her baby was preterm in February of this year. Following the ultrasound, doctors discovered a bright spot on Dominic’s liver and an enlarged heart.
When her husband, Jarrod, finally saw her at the hospital, she was brought into the delivery room and required an emergency department visit. She noticed that Dominic was pale, and his skin had patches on it.h-a-n-h
The next day, medical professionals informed them that their son’s liver had an arteriovenous malformation (AVM), a combination of malformed and abnormal arteries and veins, which increased the risk of bleeding into normal vessels.h-a-n-h
Doctors also informed them that the AVM in his liver was causing his heart to work overtime, leading to high output cardiac failure. They later learned that he had an AVM in his right temporal lobe, which had hemorrhaged, causing a stroke. The neurologist informed the distraught couple that their baby son might not survive. Although he was conscious, he required significant life support.
Despite Dominic’s critical condition, Meagan and Jarrod did their best to make the most of his time, taking pictures, christening him, and tucking him into bed. When they agreed to the medical recommendation to switch off Dominic’s life support, they expected him to pass away, but to their surprise, he continued to fight and is now a smiling four-month-old baby. The family does not believe that the spots on Dominic’s body are related to his other health problems.h-a-n-h
Meagan explains that Dominic’s spots are entirely unrelated to his stroke and AVM condition.
“My son was delivered by emergency c-section, and the first glimpse I had of him was he was blue, and his skin was covered with spots, and he wasn’t crying,” she said. “I thought the worst, but then he let out the weakest cry. I saw him only out of the corner of my eye as they rushed him to the neonatal intensive care unit, and I told my husband to stay with him, and that I would be fine.h-a-n-h
“I dragged myself from my bed to a wheelchair; the spinal tap hadn’t even worn off, and I demanded a nurse take me to him.
“When I got there, I could hardly see him under all the wires and tapes. They had no clue what was going on, so every possible machine was hooked up.h-a-n-h
“The next morning, I checked out of the hospital against the doctors’ orders. I still had hope that it was just preemie issues, but my world was about to fall apart.
“We were told immediately that his liver had an AVM, which was causing high output cardiac failure. He was severely jaundiced, and there was fluid around his lungs.”
This incredible story showcases the resilience of a baby who defied the odds and continues to bring joy and inspiration to his family.
