Narwhal can ‘see’ like no other animal on Earth

El nombre inglés del narval es narwhal o narwhale, y el nombre científico es Monodon monoceros. Esta ballena de tamaño mediano es famosa por su característica única de tener un largo diente en forma de cuerno en espiral delante de su cabeza, que a menudo recuerda a los unicornios míticos.

La parte que se parece al cuerno de un narval es en realidad un diente especializado. Es un canino desarrollado en espiral y una protuberancia alargada, similar al marfil.

Un narval macho tiene un solo colmillo que se alarga. El colmillo crece a lo largo de la vida del narval y puede alcanzar una longitud de 1,5 a 3,1 metros con un peso de unos 10 kg.

La mayoría de los narvales machos tienen colmillos izquierdos, y sólo 1 de cada 500 machos desarrolla colmillos derechos. Mientras tanto, sólo el 15% de las hembras de narvales tienen colmillos.

Los colmillos de las hembras son más pequeños y no tienen forma de espiral. Sólo se ha observado un caso previamente documentado de una hembra de narval con dos colmillos. El colmillo del narval no juega un papel importante en su vida diaria.
