The West Street Bridge, nestled in the heart of the MalaMala concession, serves as a vital crossing over the Sand River during the wet season.
It’s not uncommon for guides and guests to witness unique sightings on and around this bridge, providing excellent opportunities for photography.
During a routine game drive, Mike Botes and his group encountered the Kambula pride of lions, accompanied by the Ndhzenga males.
Initially believed to be heading for a drink at the Sand River, the lions surprised everyone by making a beeline for the West Street Bridge.
On this particular day, a troop of baboons was basking in the morning sun on the bridge, unaware of the lions’ approach.
As the lions nonchalantly strode onto the bridge, chaos ensued. The baboons’ alarm calls echoed through the air, signaling danger to all nearby creatures.
In a remarkable display of agility and quick thinking, the baboons made a daring move – they dashed under the bridge, clinging to the metal bars for safety.
They taunted the perplexed lions from their newfound vantage point, who could not reach them.
The incident served as a reminder of the unpredictable and sometimes comical nature of wildlife encounters in the African bush.
Amidst moments of tension and drama, some instances leave observers filled with laughter and amazement.
