Although great progress has been made in the fight against the  sale of dog meat,  the truth is that this market has not yet been completely abolished and there are thousands of  dogs slaughtered for human consumption  in some countries around the world.A fatal fate from which few creatures manage to escape but fortunately, there are still good people willing to help them.Florence, a dog rescued from a dog meat farm in Wonju, South Korea, knows this very well.

Florence had spent  her entire life confined to a cage inside the farm, unable to run or stretch.  Her captors simply saw her as a product and her fatal destiny was marked from the beginning but a generous soul decided to turn it around.

Thanks to a complaint and the passionate work of  Humane Society International , Florence was released in March 2018. Her conditions were pitiful and she was sent to a better life in the United States.Along with 16 other dogs from the farm, Florence was taken in by the  Humane Society of Central Oregon (HSCO).h-a-n-h

Her legs had become deformed  from the time she was locked up and even limping was painful. She was also a fearful dog in a state of malnutrition and the specialists knew that they had to gain her trust in order to feed her.The innocent creature had to undergo surgery to correct the damage to its legs so it could have a normal life.h-a-n-h

Fortunately, Florence had people willing to help her and they discovered that on the farm they used to feed her rice and pieces of meat. In this way they managed to gain her trust by giving her her favorite dish, perhaps the only one she knew.Florence began adding calories and energy to begin the series of surgeries necessary to walk again.h-a-n-h

The little girl underwent two different leg surgeries . The first to strengthen her knees and the second to reconstruct and straighten her severely deformed right leg. After the interventions, Florence began intense physical therapy.This creature’s life had taken a complete turn since her rescue from the terrible farm but something more was still missing.h-a-n-h

Lynne Ouchida, community outreach manager at  HSCO , took the dog to a public event and a woman fell in love with her. It was Megan Watkins, who was struck by Florence’s story and her determination to get ahead.For Megan, it was not enough to share the dog at the event and the following Monday she went to the shelter to visit her and began the process to take her home.h-a-n-h

Before becoming her forever family, Megan and her family served as a foster home for Florence and adapted the place for the dog’s comfort. The Watkins made modifications to some doors and added ramps so Florence could move around comfortably.
